A Garden of One’s Own
Philadelphia Flower Show 2022
We were invited to create a show garden for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s 2022 Flower Show. Our garden won the PHS Silver Trophy, a Gold medal and the PNLA’s Award for Best use of Plants. In 2023 it recieved a Gold Award in the Show Gardens from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD).
In our show garden, layers of conceptual ideas were woven together to make a restful experience that was inspired by the multiple roles that women have had to play during the pandemic years. We looked back to Virginia Woolf’s essay, ‘A Room of One’s Own’. In it, she posits that women need a space of their own, free from societal roles and expectations, to be creative. We imagined a feminine place of rest and renewal.
